How to Choose the Right FLL Innovation Project Topic

Selecting a topic is one of the most important decisions an FIRST LEGO League team will make during the Innovation Project.
A good topic gives students a clear direction, keeps them engaged, and leaves enough time for research, design, testing, and improvement. A poorly chosen topic can cause the team to spend weeks researching without ever reaching a workable solution.
The best topic is not necessarily the most ambitious or impressive-sounding idea. It is one that fits the students, the season timeline, and the resources available to the team.

Why Topic Selection Matters

The Innovation Project involves much more than presenting an invention. Students must understand a real problem, investigate existing solutions, talk with people who know about or experience the problem, develop their own idea, and improve it based on feedback.

If the topic is too complicated, students may depend heavily on adults to understand the problem or design the solution. If it is too broad, they may collect a great deal of information without knowing what to do with it. If the topic does not interest them, motivation often fades as the season becomes busier.

A well-chosen topic helps students take ownership of the project. They can explain the problem in their own words, make meaningful decisions, and understand why their solution could help someone.


Scope the Problem Carefully

Many teams begin with a broad issue such as pollution, transportation safety, food waste, or access to sports. These are useful starting areas, but they are not yet manageable project topics.

For example, “preventing plastic pollution in waterways” is far too broad for most FLL teams. A more appropriate topic might be “preventing snack wrappers from entering a local creek through storm drains near schools.” The narrower version identifies a specific type of waste, location, pathway, and group of people.

Criteria for Selecting a Topic

1. Student interest and ownership

Students should have a genuine interest in the topic. Adults can introduce possibilities and help students compare them, but the final choice should belong to the team. Ask students whether they would still want to investigate the problem after several weeks. A topic that generates questions and discussion is usually a stronger choice than one selected only because an adult believes it will impress the judges.

2. Student age and expertise

The problem should be understandable at the students’ developmental level. Students do not need to be experts at the beginning, but they must be able to learn enough to explain the problem and make informed design decisions.
A younger or less experienced team may be more successful with a visible, local problem. An experienced team may be ready for a topic involving more complicated technology or systems. If adults must repeatedly translate the core concepts for the students, the topic may be too advanced.

3. Available time

Teams should evaluate whether they can complete the entire project process during the FLL season. Research is only one part of the work. Students also need time to interview experts, analyze existing solutions, generate ideas, build a model or prototype, collect feedback, make improvements, and prepare their presentation.A topic that requires months of data collection, government approval, specialized manufacturing, or access to a restricted facility may not fit the timeline. The team does not have to solve the entire problem, but it should be able to demonstrate and evaluate its main idea.

4. Access to local experts and users

The strongest projects often involve problems students can observe locally. Consider whether the team can visit a relevant location or speak with people who experience, study, or manage the problem.Potential resources might include teachers, university researchers, nonprofit organizations, local businesses, public agencies, coaches, medical professionals, or community members. Direct access makes the research more concrete and helps students receive useful feedback.

5. Available materials and technical resources

Before choosing a topic, consider what the team would need to explore and demonstrate its solution. Can students obtain the necessary materials? Can they create a model using LEGO parts, craft supplies, simple electronics, software, or readily available components?The prototype does not need to be a fully functional commercial product. However, the team should have some practical way to communicate, test, or demonstrate the central idea.

6. Parental and community expertise

Parents can be valuable sources of professional knowledge and connections. A parent may help the team understand an industry, arrange an expert interview, or identify resources that would otherwise be difficult to find.However, parental expertise should support student learning rather than determine the project. Students must still ask the questions, evaluate the information, make the design choices, and explain the solution. A topic is appropriate only if the students—not just the adults around them—can understand and own it.

Make the Final Choice

After generating several possibilities, teams can score each topic based on student interest, manageable scope, available time, access to experts, available resources, and opportunities to test a solution. The highest-scoring topic may not sound the most dramatic, but it will usually offer the best learning experience.

An effective FLL Innovation Project begins with a problem students care about and can realistically investigate. When the scope and resources match the team, students can spend less time struggling with the topic and more time doing what the Innovation Project is designed to encourage: researching, creating, testing, collaborating, and improving.
