Description
Welcome to 2026-2027 FTC Prep Class at Dr. Owl Academy!
Course Overview
This is an intensive, hands-on program designed for students who are eager to explore the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). However, it is specifically tailored for those who are not yet ready to commit to a full competitive season. Consequently, this course serves as the crucial bridge between introductory robotics and professional-grade engineering. Furthermore, it provides the comprehensive technical foundation required to succeed at the next level of competition.
What to Expect
Structured to simulate the challenges of an actual FTC build season, the curriculum focuses on building confidence. In addition, it ensures mastery across key engineering disciplines:
Hardware & Iterative Design
Starting with a foundational starter bot, students establish a baseline understanding of FTC-level construction. Through this process of iterative modification, they systematically upgrade the base robot. Therefore, they can easily learn advanced mechanical concepts, such as implementing a mecanum drivetrain for holonomic movement. As they enhance their build, students are also introduced to industry-standard Computer-Aided Design (CAD). Consequently, they learn how to digitally model their modifications and visualize how custom upgrades integrate with the physical robot.
Advanced Control & Programming
Moving beyond basic logic, students dive deep into the software architectures that power competitive FTC robots. Specifically, the curriculum covers both teleoperated systems and autonomous navigation routines. Moreover, students will learn to integrate complex sensors and program their new mecanum drivetrains. As a result, they will build the robust coding foundations necessary for precision movement on the field.
Course Outcomes
By emphasizing iterative design and technical problem-solving, the FTC Prep Course equips students with exact skills. In addition, it fosters the mechanical intuition and confidence they need. Ultimately, they will be ready to step seamlessly onto a competitive FTC team when they choose to. Finally, Coach Shannon will customize the learning experience based on the team’s current setup and skills.
We can’t wait to see what you’ll build and achieve this season!
Note: Additional material fees required.
